MENTAL HEALTH AND SENSORY INTEGRATION/MODULATION DISORDERS
LYNN A. BALZER-MARTIN, PH.D., OTR
Lynn A. Balzer-Martin is a pediatric occupational therapist with a
doctorate in special education. Her workshop will focus on
the connection between mental health issues, sensory integration
dysfunction, and sensory modulation disorder. It will
explore strategies mental health practitioners can incorporate in
their practice, and the ways they can collaborate with OTs.
The workshop will include general background on sensory
integration dysfunction and sensory modulation disorders.
Dr. Balzer-Martin specializes in evaluating children with problems
in nonverbal skills and/or attention and behavior. She also
screens children at preschools and upon referral from
pediatricians. She has a private practice in Chevy Chase.

UNDERSTANDING BRAIN FUNCTIONING AND DEVELOPMENT CAN BE HELPFUL TO
THERAPISTS
WILLIAM R. STIXRUD, PH.D.
William R. Stixrud,
Ph.D., a clinical neuropsychologist, assesses children,
adolescents and adults with learning, attentional and/or emotional
disorders. He will focus on aspects of brain functioning and
development that appear to be most important in fostering
self-regulation in children and teens. Effects of stress,
sleep deprivation, and chemicals on the developing brain as well
as developmental changes in brain functioning that are relevant to
sleep/wakefulness, attention, emotional reactions and behavior
will be discussed. He will present therapeutic strategies
from cognitive behavioral therapy and Neuro-Linguistic
programming, and techniques from Brain Gym, solution oriented
therapies and the meditative traditions.

provides three hours of continuing education credit. The
Child Center and Adult Services is approved by the Maryland Board
of Examiners in Psychology and the National Board for Certified
Counselors. The Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners
certifies that each workshop meets the criteria for three credit
hours of Category 1 continuing education for social workers and
associates licensed in Maryland.

started a Positive Aging Program

adults at Holiday Park Senior Center.
